SUN OF LACE 2026

Sun of Lace explores the relationship between repetition in craft, light and shadow, and the connection between personal experience and collective memory through drawing and handmade lace. Light and shadow reveal fading as a trace of repetition, while the Palestinian tradition of lace-making emerges as a shadow of collective memory. I transform the lace trim adorning women’s headscarves in the Galilee into a motif of personal remembrance. My interest in shuttle lace began after discovering an 1878 icon of the Virgin Mary in al-Maghar by Yohanna Saliba Al-Orshalimi, where she wears an “Oya” scarf edged with blue handmade lace. The icon became a visual testimony to Palestinian presence and inspired me to learn the technique. What began as a contemplative practice during an artist residency soon became a daily ritual, with the threads accompanying me everywhere, even causing me to lose myself in the act of making.
